Fairfield County is the most populous county in Connecticut, encompassing cities and towns from Bridgeport and Stamford to Greenwich, Danbury, and Norwalk. Legal proceedings throughout the county generate court records that span criminal prosecutions, civil lawsuits, family law matters, and probate administration. These records — including docket entries, pleadings, judgments, orders, and sentencing documents — are maintained by the clerk offices of the various courts that serve the county.

Connecticut residents and the public can locate court records through several channels, including clerk offices at individual courthouses, the Connecticut Judicial Branch’s online case search tools, and public access terminals. The Connecticut Judicial Branch website hosts separate lookup systems for civil, criminal, family, housing, small claims, and appellate matters. ConnecticutCourts.us may also help users find publicly available court case information across the state. For probate matters specifically, the Connecticut Probate Courts maintain a separate online search system.

Are Court Records Public in Fairfield County?

Under the Connecticut Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), government records — including court records — are generally accessible to the public. The Connecticut Judicial Branch permits inspection of court files at the clerk’s office, and members of the public have the right to view any document in a court file unless a judge has sealed it or a statute renders the contents confidential.

Connecticut law identifies several categories of records that are restricted from public access:

  • Juvenile records — Records of juvenile matters are generally confidential under Connecticut General Statutes § 46b-124, with limited exceptions (for example, delinquency records may be available to crime victims)
  • Sealed records — A judge may order all or part of a court file sealed; only those portions specifically ordered sealed become unavailable, while the remainder stays public
  • Adoption records — Protected by statute and not available for public inspection
  • Automatically sealed communications — Records involving communications between a patient and psychologist, psychiatrist, or physician; between a sexual assault or domestic violence counselor and a victim; and between a social worker or therapist and a client are sealed by statute
  • Erased records — Under CGS § 54-142a, police, court, and prosecutorial records must be erased when a defendant is acquitted (after 20 days), when a nolle is entered (after 13 months), when a pardon is granted, or when the underlying offense has been decriminalized
  • Confidential identifiers — Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, and financial account information are not publicly disclosed

Anyone affected by an order sealing court documents may petition the Appellate Court for review within 72 hours of issuance, per CGS § 51-164x, with certain statutory exceptions.
